Dr. Kamlesh Verma, Surgical Oncologist at Apollomedics Super Specialty Hospitals, said that “The tumor surrounding jawbone was substantially massive and could split anytime soon, thus we were needed to work on it really quick. Composite tissue loss is usually more extensive, and the versatility of the fibula flap comes into play. The surgery has an overall impact on the life of a patient both mentally as well as physically.”

Dr. Nikhil Puri, Consultant, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery at Apollomedics Super Specialty Hospitals told, “A young adult came with tumor surrounding lower jaw bone. Dr. Kamlesh Verma, Surgical Oncologist took out cancer followed by reconstruction of the jaw bone with the help of bone from the leg by Dr. Nikhil Puri. In this complex and technically demanding surgery, which continued for 7 hours, the smaller bone of the leg (fibula) was safely harvested from the leg along with the skin and its blood vessels. The bone was then given the shape of the jaw bone that was removed and fixed to the remaining jaw bone with plates and screws. This was followed by vascular anastomosis of blood vessels (arteries and veins) of harvested leg bone with vessels of the neck (a microvascular technique to provide supply to the transplanted part). The patient is now discharged and recovering well.

Dr. Nikhil Puri further added that the jaw bone is a critical component of the face and involved in daily functions such as mastication, speech, swallowing, and breathing. Aesthetically, it supports the lower lip and chin and delineates the facial complex from the neck. He added that after this surgery, the patient can have teeth implanted on the new bone which will help him to eat and speak properly. This surgery will have a great impact on patients’ psychosocial state and quality of life added to Dr. Nikhil Puri, Plastic Surgeon at Apollomedics.
“These kinds of complex surgeries require skilled and experienced surgeons combined with excellent infrastructure. In oral cancer surgery, the reconstruction of the affected part plays a vital role as it affects the quality of life of the patient. In this case, the patient will be able to lead a normal life after surgery. I want to congratulate both the surgeons for this Remarkable surgery, added Dr. Mayank Somani, Managing Director, and CEO, Apollomedics Super Specialty Hospitals.
